TRANSPORTATION

Transportation is the movement of people and goods from one place to the other

TYPES OF LAND TRANSPORTATION

  1. Road transport- for road transport, automobiles such as cars, lorries, buses etc are used to move people and goods from one point to another.
  2. Rail transport- here, the train is used to move people from one point to another

 

ADVANTAGE OF RAIL TRANSPORTATION

  1. capable of hauling heavy loads
  2. they are more reliable
  3. rail transport is efficient
  4. it provides employment opportunities

 

DISADVANTAGES OF RAIL TRANSPORTATION

  1. unsuitable for short distances and small loads
  2. no rail service in rural or hilly areas
  3. lack of door to door service
  4. large crowds during peak time may be a problem
  5. sound and air pollution

 

ADVANTAGES OF ROAD TRANSPORTATION

  1. it employs a large number of people
  2. it is the only means of transportation that can take people to their doorsteps
  3. it facilitates the movement of people within short distances
  4. it can built in remote and hilly areas
  5. it is more economical

 

DISADVANTAGES OF ROAD TRANSPORTATION

  1. it is vulnerable to seasons and weather impacts
  2. it is not the best option for long distances and heavy cargoes
  3. it takes quite long for long journeys especially when there are traffic delays and breakdowns
  4. there is a risk of goods being damaged
  5. toll charges are high in some countries
