NOTE

FAMILY LIVING

Pregnancy is the condition in which a woman carries and nourishes a developing fetus within her womb, typically lasting about 40 weeks, starting from the first day of her last menstrual period (LMP). Pregnancy occurs when a sperm fertilizes an egg, leading to implantation in the uterine wall.

Signs of pregnancy
Common signs of pregnancy include:

  • Missed period: One of the earliest and most common signs.
  • Morning sickness: Nausea and vomiting, especially in the first trimester.
  • Frequent urination: Increased need to urinate due to hormonal changes.
  • Fatigue: A feeling of tiredness due to hormonal shifts and increased energy demands.
  • Breast changes: Tender, swollen breasts or darkening of the areolas.
  • Mood swings: Changes in mood due to hormonal fluctuations.
  • Food cravings or aversions: Desire for certain foods or disliking others.
  • Changes in taste or smell: Heightened senses during pregnancy.
  • Spotting or light bleeding: Some women experience light bleeding or spotting early in pregnancy.
  • Abdominal bloating: Hormonal changes may cause bloating or mild cramping.

EVALUATION:

  1. What are the most common early signs of pregnancy, and how can they be differentiated from other health conditions?
  2. How does a missed period indicate pregnancy, and why might it not always be an accurate sign?
  3. Explain the role of hormonal changes in the development of common pregnancy symptoms such as nausea and fatigue.
  4. What are some non-visible signs of pregnancy that can be detected through a medical test?
  5. How can a woman distinguish between normal pregnancy-related symptoms and complications that may require medical attention?
