The teacher revises the previous lesson and introduces the new topic by explaining what negatives words and sentences are and giving examples Negative sentences have the opposite meaning to positive sentences.
Examples Positive: I am used to reading all night Negative: I am not used to reading all night Positive: Abubakar sometimes drives his father’s car Negative: Abubakar never drives his father’s car
The most important negative word is not. The word not makes a whole clause negative. Its short form is n’t Examples Do not – don’t Has not- hasn’t Have not – haven’t Cannot- can’t Will not – won’t Was not- wasn’t Would not – wouldn’t Did not – didn’t
Other negative words include Neither no one neither….nor none never nor no nothing nobody nowhere Sentence examples 1. Neither skirt looks good on you 2. I would never do anything to hurt my sister 3. No one was allowed into the theatre 4. None of us wanted to wait for dinner 5. There is nothing more dangerous than drug addiction Other words with negative meaning In addition to the words mentioned above, these words have a negative meaning Few hardly little scarcely rarely barely seldom Sentence examples 1. Unfortunately, the hospital has few doctors 2. My father remembers little about the incident 3. I have seldom seen a more skillful performance by the team 4.
