Week 12

The teacher introduces the new topic by explaining of the sound /r/ is produced

/r/

The /r/ sound is produced when your tongue curves backwards to a position near to, but not touching the back part of the upper tooth ridge. At the same time, the side of your tongue touches your side teeth while air escapes over the central part of the tongue. The /r/ sound is one of the sounds known as approximants and it is voiced.

The teacher describes how the /r/ sound is spelt

The /r/ sound can be spelt as;

r

rr

rh

Wr

NOTE:

When the spelling of a word ends in r(e.g. ear, far, poor) or the r comes before the final vowel letter(as in words like there, here, where), the r can be seen as a linking form
