Week 9

The teacher revises the previous lesson and introduces the new topic by explaining the two types of prose

 

Types of prose

1.   Narrative prose: This form of prose endeavours to tell a well-defined story

2.   Descriptive prose: This form of prose provides a full description of persons, places, things or events

 

The teacher further explains the genres of prose

Genres of Prose

1.   Short stories: Short stories have a compact narrative and the characters are well-known. Examples are My book of Virtues(Series A-E) by Adejoke Ajeyomi, Dobia’s secret by Kema Chikwe, A Hungry Private Eye by Oluseye Okediji

2.   Novel: This is prose on a bigger scale. Examples are Shadow’s edge by Ajeyomi Adejoke, Underworld City by Ajeyomi Adejoke, Silas Marner by George Elliot, Chimere by Ifeoma Okoye etc

3.   Folktales: This is the kind of fictional narrative concerned with human beings or animals. The stories about human beings deal with situations in our everyday experiences. Some examples include “The singing vulture”, “The dog and the cockerel” etc

4.   Myths: These began as oral narratives which explained matters concerning the beliefs of a group of people in a particular environment. Examples are “How to world came to be”, “Why there is day and night” etc

5.   Legends: These are about humans who may have a basis in history or non-human objects such as plants, rivers and hills which must have played significant roles in human life in the past. An example is “Moremi of Ife”

6.   Biography: This is a story about someone’s life written by another person. It is a true-life story and is non-fiction. Examples are Winning By His Grace written by Professor Emmanuel Emenyonu about Dr Felix Ohiwerei(Chairman, Fidson Health Care Plc)

7.   Autobiography: This is a book which someone writes about his/her own life. It is always an unfinished story. Examples are Camara Laye’s The African Child and The Autobiography Of Chief Obafemi Awolowo
