NOTE

POPULATION

A population is the complete set group of individuals, whether that group

comprises a nation or a group of people with a common characteristic.

 

There are three major concepts of population;

  1. Under population- This is when the human population is less than the

resources available

  1. Optimum population- This is the ideal number of population that a

country should have considering its resources.

  1. Over population- Overpopulation is the state whereby the human

population rises to an extent exceeding the carrying capacity of the

ecological setting.

 

CORE UNITS OF POPULATIONS

The core units of population are

  1. the family- a group of people related by blood, marriage or adoption
  2. the community- a group of people living in an area and sharing common

interests.

 

BENEFITS OF OVERPOPULATION

  1. availability of enough manpower
  2. abundance of goods
  3. More support and investments by foreign entities
  4. Easy dissemination of information

 

PROBLEMS OF OVERPOPULATION

  1. low standard of living
  2. high crime rate
  3. overcrowding and congestion problems
  4. High cost of living
  5. Low access to social amenities
  6. high unemployment rate
  7. environmental pollution

 

CONTROL OF OVERPOPULATION

  1. family planning and regulations on the number of birth by family
  2. encouragement of monogamy
  3. public enlightenment and sensitization
  4. Advocacy campaigns to the rural areas on the dangers of overpopulation
  5. Strict immigration laws
  6. Sex education
