Week 5

The teacher revises the previous lesson and introduces the new topic by discussing some words associated with the environment

 

It is a good thing to be conscious of certain things that affect our environment positively or negatively. It is important to take good care of our environment. Here are some words and phrases you need to know about the environment.

1. Acid rain – Rain that contains harmful chemicals due to pollution in the air.

2. Drought – A long period of time with little or no rain.

3. Conservation – The protection and careful use of natural resources.

4. Volcanic eruption – When a volcano releases lava, ash, and gases from inside the Earth.

5. Energy – Power used to do work, such as electricity, heat, or fuel.

6. Endangered species – Animals or plants that are at risk of becoming extinct.

7. Nuclear waste – Radioactive material left over from the production of nuclear energy.

8. Landslide – The movement of rocks and soil down a slope due to gravity.

9. Flood – An overflow of water that covers land which is usually dry.

10. Greenhouse effect – The trapping of the sun's heat in the Earth's atmosphere, warming the planet.

11. Pollution – Harmful substances in the environment that damage air, water, or land.

12. Ozone layer – A layer of gas in the Earth's atmosphere that protects us from the sun's harmful rays.

13. Climate – The typical weather patterns in a place over a long period.

14. Typhoon – A powerful tropical storm with strong winds and heavy rain (similar to a hurricane).

15. Solar – Related to the sun, often referring to energy from sunlight.

16. Exhaust fumes – Gases released by vehicles when fuel is burned.

17. Global warming – The gradual increase in Earth's temperature due to human activities.

18. Earthquake – A sudden shaking of the ground caused by the movement of Earth's crust.

19. Carbon monoxide – A poisonous gas produced when fuel is burned, especially in cars.

20. Nuclear reactor – A device that produces energy by splitting atoms, used in nuclear power plants.

21. Tsunamis – Large ocean waves caused by underwater earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.
