Main areas in the assessment of compositions

3. Expression: This refers to the language used in communicating your ideas on paper. You should use clear, correct and appropriate English. Arrange your sentences very well and vary them, that is, use both short and long sentences; make good use of punctuation marks as well as figurative expressions.

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELLING

The teacher then defines mechanical accuracy and how it is one of the main areas of assessment in compositions

4. Mechanical accuracy

Mechanical accuracy in composition refers to the correctness of basic writing conventions, such as spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and sentence structure. It is one of the main areas of assessment when evaluating written work, ensuring that the text adheres to the standard rules of the language. Mechanical accuracy focuses on technical correctness rather than the content or ideas, and errors in these areas can affect the clarity and professionalism of the writing.

The errors that your teacher rings are from the following categories

a.   Errors of grammar: wrong tense, omission of subject/predicate/complement, misuses of countable and uncountable nouns, wrong use of pronouns and prepositions etc

b.   Errors of punctuation: failure to use full stops, commas, question marks, quotation marks etc

c.   Use of small letetr for personal pronoun I. Note that “I” should always be written in a capital letter whether it appears at the beginning or middle of your sentences.

d.   Spelling errors

e.   Abbreviation errors: Example BECE or B.E.C.E, WASSCE or W.A.S.S.C.E etc
