NOTE

MASS MEDIA

Mass media is the means of communication that reach large numbers

of people in a short time, such as television, newspapers, magazines,

and radio.

 

TYPES OF MASS MEDIA

  1. Electronic media e.g television, radio, internet, movies etc
  2. Print media e.g newspapers, novels, journals etc
  3. Traditional media e.g gongs, town criers, etc

 

POSITIVE EFFECTS OF MASS MEDIA

  1. They create massive awareness about contemporary social issues such

as corruption, human trafficking, drug trafficking, cultism, bribery etc

  1. They bridge the wide gap especially with regards to gender inequality

and gender based crimes

  1. they promote unity and tolerance
  2. they educate about the dangers of harmful traditional practices such as

female genital mutilation, child marriage, maltreatment of widows etc

  1. They sensitize and orientate people about Sexually transmitted diseases

such as HIV/AIDS, syphillis, gonorhea etc

  1. They lead the advocacy against crimes and criminal behaviours

 

NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF THE MASS MEDIA

  1. it promote indecency and sexual immorality
  2. it promote vulgar expressions
  3. it increases violence in the society
  4. it promotes viewing women as objects leading to some gender-based

crime
