I WISH I HAD LISTENED TO MY MOTHER

Looking back, I realize how important it is to listen to your mother’s advice. My experience in Abuja, when I was kidnapped during a family vacation, taught me a life lesson I will never forget.

It was a warm afternoon when we arrived in Abuja to visit a family friend for a holiday. My mother, as always, was cautious and reminded me constantly to stay close to the family and not wander off. But being a teenager eager for adventure, I felt like I knew better. The bustling city had so much to offer, and I wanted to explore it on my own terms.

A few days into the trip, my curiosity got the better of me. We were at our family friend’s house when I received a text from someone I had just met during the trip. They invited me to meet up at a nearby park. My mother, sensing something was off, insisted that I stay indoors. She warned me that Abuja was unfamiliar to us and we had to be careful. Ignoring her advice, I snuck out while everyone was busy, thinking nothing bad could happen to me.

The park was not far, but as I made my way through the streets, two men approached me out of nowhere. Before I could react, I was grabbed, blindfolded, and shoved into a van. My heart pounded as fear consumed me. I regretted every step I took that led me there.

For hours, I was held captive, terrified of what might happen next. Thankfully, after what seemed like an eternity, I was found by the police, thanks to the swift action of my family, who had realized I was missing and immediately informed the authorities. I was rescued unharmed, but shaken.

That harrowing experience taught me a valuable lesson: trust your mother’s instincts. She had warned me, and if I had listened, I could have avoided the nightmare. From that day on, I never questioned her advice again. I wish I had listened to my mother.
