THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS

Account of the Resurrection of Jesus

The resurrection of Jesus is a foundational event in Christianity, recorded in all four Gospels: Matthew 28:1-10, Mark 16:1-8, Luke 24:1-12, and John 20:1-18. According to these accounts, on the first day of the week after Jesus' crucifixion, Mary Magdalene and other women went to the tomb to anoint His body with spices. They found the stone rolled away from the entrance and the tomb empty.

In Matthew's account, an angel appeared to the women, saying, "He is not here; he has risen, just as he said" (Matthew 28:6). The women were instructed to tell the disciples that Jesus had risen from the dead. In Mark's Gospel, a young man dressed in white reassured them and gave a similar message. Luke adds that the women encountered two angels who reminded them of Jesus’ predictions about His resurrection. In John’s account, Mary Magdalene encounters the risen Jesus near the tomb, initially mistaking Him for the gardener until He calls her by name.

Following His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples multiple times over a period of forty days, providing them with further teachings and proof of His resurrection. He ultimately commissioned them to spread the message of salvation and promised the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Significance of the Resurrection of Jesus

The resurrection of Jesus holds profound significance for Christians for several reasons:

  1. Foundation of Christian Faith: The resurrection is the cornerstone of Christian belief. It validates Jesus as the Son of God and affirms His teachings. As Paul states in 1 Corinthians 15:14, "And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith."
  2. Victory Over Death: Jesus' resurrection signifies His victory over sin and death. It demonstrates that through Him, believers also have the hope of eternal life. This is encapsulated in John 11:25-26, where Jesus says, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die."
  3. Promise of New Life: The resurrection signifies the promise of new life for believers. It symbolizes spiritual rebirth and transformation, as seen in Romans 6:4, which states that just as Christ was raised from the dead, believers too walk in newness of life.
  4. Assurance of God’s Power: The resurrection illustrates God’s supreme power over death and evil. It reassures believers that God is able to bring about new beginnings and hope in seemingly hopeless situations

EVALUATION:

  1. Describe the events that took place on the morning of Jesus' resurrection as recorded in the four Gospels. What were the key differences among these accounts?
  2. Analyze the significance of the angelic messages delivered to the women at the tomb. How did these messages contribute to the understanding of Jesus' resurrection?
  3. Discuss the implications of Jesus’ appearances to His disciples after the resurrection. How did these encounters shape the early Christian community and their understanding of His teachings?
  4. Evaluate the statement from 1 Corinthians 15:14 regarding the resurrection's role in Christian faith. Why is the resurrection considered essential to the foundation of Christianity?
  5. Reflect on the transformative aspect of the resurrection as mentioned in Romans 6:4. How does the promise of new life impact the belief and practices of Christians today?
