FORESTS

A forest is an ecological habitat where trees, other plants and many animals co-exist. The trees are usually tall and woody.

TYPES OF FORESTS

  1. Mangrove forest: This is located in swamps of the coastal creeks, estuaries and lagoons of southern Nigeria. The trees dominant there are red and white mangroves, palm trees and lianas.
  2. Rain forest: In this area, rain falls for about 8-9 months every year and humidity is also very high. Trees found in this area are oil palm, iroko, mahogany, rubber, obeche, opepe, afara etc
  3. The savanna zones: it covers 80% of the country. The zone is divided into

       i. Derived savanna: it is characterized by few fire tolerant savanna species and a few forest trees

ii. Guinea savanna: it is the largest vegetation belt in Nigeria. This region is characterized by natural grassland, spares woodland or trees. Trees such as Isoberlina dokii, Isoberlina tomentosa, parkia clappertonia(locust bean), bytysperimum parkii(shea butter tree) etc are dominant in this region

iii. Sudan savanna: Rainfall here lasts 2-3 months and relative humidity is very low. The vegetation is a mixture of shoot grasses and short-topped trees

iv. Sahel savanna: The vegetation is sparse and is made up of short grasses and scattered shrubs. The dry season there is about 8-9 months in the year.
