Week 7

The teacher revises the previous lesson and introduces the new topic by defining syllables and discussing forms of syllables

 

Syllable is a sound or group of sounds whose most significant or important part is a vowel.

 

Forms of syllables

1.   Monosyllable: These are words with one syllable

Forms of Monosyllable

a.   Syllables made up of both consonant and vowel sounds e.g cat, dog, go, for, oat etc

b.   Syllables with just one vowel sound e.g I, owe, are, air etc

2.   Disyllable: these are words with two syllables e.g fell-ow, ob-tain, de-ceive etc

3.   Polysyllables: these are words with three or more syllables e.g u-ni-form, te-rri-ble, ma-na-ger, or-ga-ni-za-tion etc

The teacher explains the syllabic consonants using word examples

 

Each syllable has a vowel as its most important element. However, sometimes certain vowel-like consonants like /l/, and nasal sounds like /m/ or /n/ could act as the core of the syllable
