Week 7

The teacher revises the previous lesson and introduces the new topic by stating and explaining the features of poetry

 

Features of poetry

1.   Lines: Poetry expresses ideas or feelings in lines

2.   Stanzas: This refers to a group of lines in a repeated pattern that forms part of a poem.

3.   Couplet: This refers to two lines of poetry that are of the same length, one following the other.

4.   Sestet: this refers to the last six lines of a poem that contains 14 lines. The first eight lines are called an octave. A poem that contains 14 lines is called a sonnet.

5.   Rhyme: This is a short poem especially for children that uses words that end with the same sound(rhyme).

6.   Rhythm: This is when the poem has a regular repeated patterns of sound

7.   Verse: this refers to a set of lines that forms one part of a poem

8.   Repetition: Poetry makes much use of repetition. This is usually done for emphasis

9.   Imagery: Poetry also makes much use of imagery. It refers to the use of words to describe ideas. The words are so strong that they create pictures in the minds of the readers, thereby making poems easy to remember and understand.

 

Language of poetry

Techniques such as simile, metaphor and personification are often used more in poetry than in prose and drama. Forms of languages used in poetry includes:

1.   Concise Language: The language of poetry is concise. It is usually written in lines and stanzas that are measured and arranged in a way that gives it rhythm.

2.   High-level language: Sometimes the language is advanced and complicated. This is because of the various techniques and imagery used by poets.
