THE DEATH AND BURIAL OF JESUS

Account of the Death and Burial of Jesus

The death and burial of Jesus are critical events in the Gospels, occurring after His trial and condemnation. The accounts can be found in Matthew 27:32-66, Mark 15:21-47, Luke 23:26-54, and John 19:16-42.

After being sentenced to crucifixion, Jesus was led to Golgotha, the place of the skull, where He was nailed to the cross alongside two criminals. As He hung on the cross, Jesus experienced intense suffering and mockery from bystanders. He spoke several phrases, including the poignant cry, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46). After several hours of agony, Jesus uttered His final words, "It is finished," indicating the completion of His mission of redemption. He then gave up His spirit and died.

Upon His death, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, symbolizing the removal of the barrier between God and humanity. The earth shook, and tombs broke open, leading to the resurrection of some saints, which signified the impact of Jesus’ sacrifice.

After His death, Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the Jewish council who had not consented to Jesus’ condemnation, boldly asked Pilate for Jesus' body. Pilate granted his request, and Joseph, along with Nicodemus, took Jesus' body down from the cross, wrapped it in linen, and placed it in a new tomb that Joseph had prepared. A large stone was rolled across the entrance to secure the tomb, and the women who had followed Jesus witnessed the burial.

  1. Significance of the Death and Burial of Jesus

The death and burial of Jesus hold profound theological and spiritual significance:

  • Atonement for Sin: Jesus' death is central to Christian belief as the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of humanity. It fulfills the Old Testament sacrificial system, demonstrating God's love and justice. Through His death, believers are offered forgiveness and reconciliation with God (Romans 5:8).
  • Fulfillment of Prophecy: The events surrounding Jesus' death and burial fulfill numerous Old Testament prophecies, reinforcing His identity as the Messiah. Scriptures such as Isaiah 53 describe the suffering servant and the nature of the Messiah’s sacrifice.
  • Demonstration of Humility and Obedience: Jesus’ willingness to endure suffering and death exemplifies His humility and obedience to God's will. Philippians 2:8 emphasizes that He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
  • Defeating Death and Sin: Jesus’ death marks the defeat of sin and death, paving the way for the resurrection. His burial signifies His complete identification with humanity and the reality of His physical death, setting the stage for the triumphant resurrection that follows.
  • Assurance of Eternal Life: The burial of Jesus signifies that He truly died and was buried, assuring believers of the reality of His resurrection. His victory over death offers hope of eternal life to all who believe in Him (John 3:16).

EVALUATION:

  1. Describe the circumstances leading to the crucifixion of Jesus. What events preceded His death, and how did they contribute to His trial and condemnation?
  2. What significant statements did Jesus make while on the cross, and what do they reveal about His mission and purpose?
  3. Explain the symbolic meaning of the curtain of the temple being torn in two at the moment of Jesus' death. What does this signify regarding the relationship between God and humanity?
  4. Discuss the role of Joseph of Arimathea in the burial of Jesus. Why was his action significant in the context of Jesus' death?
  5. Analyze the theological significance of Jesus' death and burial in relation to the themes of atonement, prophecy fulfillment, and the promise of eternal life. How do these elements contribute to Christian beliefs?
