Correlative conjunctions are also called double conjunctions because they work in pairs.

 

Examples

1.   Either…..or(giving alternatives)

a.   I told her she could have either rice or beans

b.   Either you read your books or you fail your exams

2.   Not…..but(replacing one idea with another)

a.   The Eagles are playing not next month but the month afterwards

b.   It’s not the boys, but the girls who are making a noise in the class.

3.   Not only…..But(also)(adding one idea to another)

a.   Our teacher is not only an expert but also a great beauty

4.   Neither…..nor(adding two negative ideas together)

a.   Yusuf is neither handsome nor clever, but his classmates love him

b.   Neither my mother nor my sisters go to the theatre

5.   If…….then(giving a logical result)

a.   If you work hard, then you will pass the Cambridge O’ level exams
