MUSIC: SCALE II

Types of major scale

There's essentially one type of major scale, which is the standard major scale. It follows a specific pattern of whole steps and half steps: whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step, half step.

For example, in the key of C Major: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C.

The following are the major scale with 1-3 flats in ascending and descending order:

Ascending order:

  1. Key of F Major (1 flat - Bb)
  2. Key of Bb Major (2 flats - Bb and Eb)
  3. Key of Eb Major (3 flats - Bb, Eb, and Ab)

Descending order:

  1. Key of Eb Major (3 flats - Ab, Eb, and Bb)
  2. Key of Bb Major (2 flats - Eb and Bb)
  3. Key of F Major (1 flat - Bb)

Types of minor scale

There are three types of minor scales:

  1. Natural Minor Scale: This is the most basic form of the minor scale, often referred to simply as the minor scale. It follows the pattern: whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step. For example, in the key of A minor: A, B, C, D, E, F, G.
  2. Harmonic Minor Scale: The harmonic minor scale raises the seventh note of the natural minor scale by a half step. Its pattern is: whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, half step, augmented second, half step. For example, in the key of A harmonic minor: A, B, C, D, E, F, G#.
  3. Melodic Minor Scale: The melodic minor scale raises the sixth and seventh notes of the natural minor scale when ascending, but reverts to the natural minor scale when descending. When ascending, its pattern is: whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step, whole step, half step. When descending, it follows the pattern of the natural minor scale. For example, in the key of A melodic minor ascending: A, B, C, D, E, F#, G#. And descending: G, F, E, D, C, B, A.

For minor scales, the relative minor keys are used, which share the same key signatures as their relative majors:

Ascending order:

  1. Relative minor of D Minor (1 flat - Bb) is Bb Minor
  2. Relative minor of G Minor (2 flats - Bb and Eb) is Eb Minor
  3. Relative minor of C Minor (3 flats - Bb, Eb, and Ab) is Ab Minor

Descending order:

  1. Relative minor of C Minor (3 flats - Ab, Eb, and Bb) is Ab Minor
  2. Relative minor of G Minor (2 flats - Eb and Bb) is Eb Minor
  3. Relative minor of D Minor (1 flat - Bb) is Bb Minor

EVALUATION: 1. How many types of major scale do we have?  indicate.

  1. Describe the major scale with 1-3 flats in ascending and descending order
  2. List and explain the types of minor scale

CLASSWORK: As in evaluation
