NOTE

METHOD OF FISHING

  1. Small scale fishing: In Nigeria, most local fishermen practice small scale fishing. They stay in small fishing camps along the banks of the rivers, ponds or streams or along the coast of the sea where they go to fish.

Features of small scaled fisheries are

  1. use of simple equipment like wooden dug-out canoes or bamboo rafts
  2. catching of fishes by simple methods like poles, nets, hooks and line
  3. small quantities of fishes are caught for family use

  1. Large scale fishing: This involves large boats or trawlers to catch fishes in inland rivers, lakes, seas and oceans. This is expensive and can be afforded by large companies like Ibru Organization, Mesu Fishing Company and National Shrimp Company

Features of large-scale fishing

  1. it is very expensive and needs good organization
  2. it is carried out in sea or ocean, where there is a large body of water
  3. it involves the use of large complicated equipment like fishing trawlers, cold stores and refrigerated transport systems
  4. A large quantity of aquatic animals such as fish, prawns, shrimps, squids, crabs, turtles and octopus are caught. They are preserved mainly by being frozen in ice in the ships and brought to land for sale to major distributors
