Week 3 |
The teacher revises the previous lesson and introduces the new topic by explaining figures of speech. 1. Irony: This is the use of words to convey the opposite of what is said or what is true; that is, the opposite of the literal meaning, to achieve a particular effect. Examples a. “I am starving”, when in actual effect, I have eaten a lot b. “The students are very early today” when in actual fact, they are late. c. “The king was happy to see the visitors”, when in actual fact, he was unhappy. 2. Hyperbole: This is the use of exaggeration for emphasis or for heightened effect. Examples a. I have not eaten for centuries b. The whole town came to welcome the team c. The world stood still when the popular musician, Micheal Jackson died. 3. Euphemism: This is the presentation of unpleasant things in a pleasant way. Examples a. The man has passed away(he has died) b. The old woman kicked the bucket.(she has died) c. I want to go to the Ladies(toilet) 4. Oxymoron: This is a figure of speech in which two opposite ideas are placed side by side to create an effect. Examples a. It was a bitter sweet affair b. He is a living dead c. Make haste slowly |
