FISHERY

Fishes are cold-blooded animals. Fishery is a branch of agriculture that deals with the capture, cultivation, processing and sales of fish and other aquatic organisms from natural as well as artificial water bodies or ponds

CLASSIFICATION OF FISHES BASED ON THEIR HABITAT

  1. Fresh water fishes: they are capable of living and reproducing only in waters free from salts. Such water bodies include inland rivers, streams, lakes, springs etc. some examples of fresh water fishes are trout, mudfish, perch, tilapia, catfish, carp, pike etc
  2. Salt water/brackish/marine fishes: these are fishes that live only in the salt waters(seas and oceans). Those that live at or near the surface are called PELAGIC marine fishes while those that live at or near the bottom of the sea are called DEMERSAL marine fishes. Example of such fishes include salmon, mackerel, eels, sharks, croaker, herring, tuna etc

CLASSIFICATION OF FISHES BASED ON THEIR MORPHOLOGY

  1. Bony fishes: these are fishes that possess bony skeletons or hard bones. Majority of these fishes are found in fresh water e.g bass, perch, herring, mackerel, tunas, eels etc
  2. Cartilaginous fishes: these are fishes which possess soft bones r bones composed of firm, shiny elastic substance called CARTILAGE. Majority of these fishes are found in salt water e.g dolphins, dogfish, rays, skates, sharks etc
