Figures of Speech Figures of speech are words or group of words used to give particular emphasis to an idea. The writer in using a figure of speech deliberately changes the literal sense of the word. Some commonly used figures of speech include 1. Simile: This is a comparison of two things of different nature or class by the use of the words “as” or “like” Examples a. Mary is as beautiful as an angel b. Jide fights like a lion 2. Metaphor: This is a direct comparison of two things without the use of “as” or “like”. Examples a. That boy is a lion b. Mary is a Jewel 3. Personification: This is the art of giving a human attribute or characteristic to something that is not human. Examples a. The sun winked at me. b. The trees are waving at us c. Morning arrived early today 4. Onomatopoeia: these are words that imitate the sounds they represent. Examples a. The buzzing of the bee b. The mewing of the cat c. The hissing of the snake d.
