INTRODUCTION

The teacher revises the previous lesson and introduces the new topic by discussing the purpose of sentences

There are four purposes of sentences. These are declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamatory

 

Declarative sentences

A declarative sentence makes a statement about a person, place, thing or idea. This is the most common type of sentence

Examples

1.   I will see you tomorrow

2.   We are learning English

3.   Audu is in JSS 2

4.   I will be twelve years old next birthday

 

Interrogative sentences

This type of sentence asks questions and ends in a question mark.

Examples

1.   What is your name?

2.   How old are you?

3.   Where were you born?

4.   Where do you live?

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELLING

The teacher further explains other purposes of sentences

Imperative sentences

Imperative sentences give commands or make requests. The sentence can also be used to give requests. The sentence can also be used to give instructions, directions and make suggestions

Examples

1.   Go and clean the toilet

2.   Shut that door

3.   Do not forget to do your assignment

4.   Tell me the truth

 

Exclamatory sentences

Exclamatory sentences are used to show strong feelings or emotions and usually end in an exclamation mark(!)

Examples

1.   What an interesting book!

2.   Watch out!

3.   Here comes the thief!

4.   What a pity!
