A subordinate clause can be used as an adverb, an adjective or a noun in a sentence

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELLING

The teacher further explains adverb clauses, adjective clauses and noun clauses

 

Adver clause can be used just like a single adverb or an adverb phrase. An adverb clause modifies the verb in the main sentence

Examples

1.   Ade ate quickly(adverb)

2.   Ade ate in a hurry(adverb phrase)

3.   Ade ate as though he had not eaten for ten days(adverb clause)

 

Adjective clause

An adjective clause can be used like a single adjective or adjective phrase

Examples

1.   This is the house that my father built

2.   The man whose wife was kidnapped has no money for the ransom

3.   The flowers which he gave me are all beautiful

 

Noun Clause

A noun clause can be used in the same way as the noun and noun phrase.

Examples

1.   Whoever wins the election will become the next president

2.   A man becomes what he chooses to make himself

3.   He explained himself to whoever cared to listen
