The Time I Overcame a Fear

Growing up in Nigeria, I had always been terrified of snakes. Even the sight of one on TV would send chills down my spine. My fear of these slithering creatures was well-known in my family. However, one afternoon during a visit to my uncle’s farm in Ogun State, I was forced to confront this fear head-on.

We had gone to the farm to help harvest yams when suddenly, one of the workers shouted, “Snake!” Everyone froze. My heart raced as I looked up to see a large, black snake coiled near the bush we were working in. Panic gripped me, but something inside me told me to stay calm. I watched as my uncle grabbed a long stick and began to move cautiously toward the snake.

Instead of running, I felt an unusual wave of courage. I found a long branch and handed it to my uncle, then followed his lead. Slowly, we worked together to guide the snake away from the farm without harming it. To my surprise, I wasn’t shaking as much as I expected. My fear hadn’t completely vanished, but I realized I could handle the situation with a clear mind.

That day, I faced one of my greatest fears. The experience taught me that fear loses its power when you confront it directly. Now, whenever I think of snakes, I remember that moment and how I found strength in the face of fear
