INTRODUCTION

The teacher revises the previous lesson and introduces the new topic by defining clauses and giving examples of clauses

 

A clause is a group of words that has a subject and a verb and is used as part of a sentence. The subject of the sentence or clause is the part that comes before the verb. It answers the question of who or what does the verb

Examples of clauses

1.   Mr Ajao lives in Lagos

2.   His wife lives in Ilorin

3.   He keeps two homes

4.   They are happy

5.   The lion ate the goat

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELLING

The teacher further explains the types of clauses.

A clause may be independent or subordinate.

An independent clause can stand on its own and make sense but a subordinate clause cannot stand on its own.
