NOTE

MIXED CROPPING

This involves the planting of different types of crops on the same piece of land at the same time. For example on a piece of land where yams, cassava, fruited, pumpkin, black beans etc

Advantages of mixed cropping

  1. it helps to improve soil fertility
  2. an insurance against crop failure
  3. It ensures the farmer of a regular supply of food over the entire season
  4. One crop may act as a cover or nurse crop for another
  5. it helps to check the growth and spread of weeds

 

Disadvantages of mixed cropping

  1. difficult to give different crops different treatments
  2. not easy to mechanize
  3. young crops may be trampled during harvesting of another crop
  4. serious competition among certain crops struggling for water, sunlight and space
