FOLKTALES
Folktales are traditional stories and they are fictional. Fictional stories are about imaginary people and events.

Folktales are meant to entertain and teach good morals.

Some examples of African folktales include:

a.   Nigerian Folktales

i.             The tortoise and the dog

ii.            The tortoise and the elephant

iii.          The hare and the dog

b.   West African Folktales

i.             Duaisi goes fishing

ii.            Why the turtle lives in water

c.   South African Folktales

i.             The jackal and the wolf

ii.            The lioness and the ostrich

d.   Ethiopian Folktales

i.             The Lion and the hare

ii.            A monkey is a monkey

e.   East African folktales

Features of folktales

1.   Folktales are didactic: A story that is didactic is intended to teach people a moral lesson. They teach people the right ways in life and the values of their communities as well.

2.   Folktales are entertaining: One of the purposes of folktales is to amuse, entertain or interest people

3.   Folktales are magical: folktales can be enjoyable and exciting in strange ways. Characters in such stories have magical powers that make them do impossible things
