Transitive verbs require objects to complete their meaning

Examples

1.   Good citizens love their country(Love-verb, country-object)

2.   Would you mind if I closed the window for a while?(closed-verb, window-object)

Transitive verbs can have a passive form

Examples

1.   The soldiers shot the terrorist(active)

The criminals were shot by the soldier

Many transitive verbs take only one object

Examples

a.   The girl cut the cake

b.   My brother boiled the water

 

Some transitive verbs take two objects

Examples

My father gave my uncle a beautiful present

Intransitive verbs are verbs that are not followed by an object(or a complement)

Examples

1.   My classmates laughed

2.   The teacher paused

3.   The children are leaving

Intransitive verbs include

a.   Verbs of position e.g stand, lie, sit

b.   Verbs of motion e.g go, fall, come

Some verbs are both transitive and intransitive. They can be used with or without an object.

Examples

1.   Maryam sang

Maryam sang a song

2.   The patient moved

The patient moved his muscles
