NOTE

COMMUNICATION

Communication means the exchange of information between two or more people who may not be close to each other.

TYPES OF COMMUNICATION

1. Traditional communication: This refers to indigenous traditional African methods of exchanging or disseminating information and ideas from one person to another. Examples include

  1. use of drum beats
  2. use of town criers
  3. use of wooden gongs
  4. use of flutes
  5. blasts of local guns
  6. use of knotted palm fronds

Features of traditional communication

  1. messages are believed by the members of the community concerned without any doubt
  2. the audience is familiar with the source and codes employed by the source
  3. it is not expensive
  4. it is transactional and the feedback is immediate

2. Modern communication: it refers to the recent or non-traditional means of exchanging information, ideas and thoughts from one prson to another. Examples include

  1. postal system
  2. newspapers
  3. radio
  4. television
  5. telephone
  6. fax machine
  7. telegraphic messages
  8. internet
  9. books

Features of modern communication

  1. has the capacity to carry larger volumes of information
  2. easier and more convenient among people
  3. expensive to purchase
  4. mostly lacks physical presence
  5. language is sometimes shortened and altered
  6. they are not very reliable

 

IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION

  1. it helps us build relationships by allowing us to share our experiences, and needs, and helps us connect to other
  2. it allows us to express feelings, pass on information and share thoughts
  3. it brings about social advancement and development of a society
  4. it helps people to acquire and develop entrepreneurship skills which helps in reducing poverty in a society
  5. it reduces opportunities for political corruption in government
  6. it makes people of a society to make informed political demands
