Week 1

The teacher revises the previous lesson and introduces the new topic by explaining the features of prose

 

Features of Prose

1.   Theme: This is the main idea or subject in a piece of writing. It is the central idea/major message discusses in a work of art

2.   Setting: This refers to the general environment of a story i.e. the period and place of the story.

3.   Plot: Plot refers to the way the events in a story or play are organized. There are stories that have straightforward plots while others have twisted, complex and difficult plots.

4.   Characterisation: This refers to the way the writer of a story or play makes the people in the story seem like real persons. The writer reveals the peculiar qualities of the characters through narration, dialogue or description. The main/most important character is called the protagonist while the character opposed to the protagonist is called the antagonist.

5.   Style: this refers to a writer’s typical way of writing a piece of work. Writers adopt different styles in their writings such as flashbacks, use of figures of speech, use of difficult words, Use of vivid descriptions etc.

6.   Point of view: This refers to the writer’s mode of narration or the narrative voice used to tell the story. The use of ‘I’ or ‘we’ indicates that the  narrator is a participant while the use of ‘he’, ‘she’ and ‘they’ is an indicator that the narrator is not a participant
