NOTE

COMMON SPORTS AND HOME INJURIES
10. BURNS AND SCALDS: Burns results from dry heat or contact with strong alkalis or acids e.g hot metals, flames from fire, contact with lightning or electricity. Scalds is caused by the effects of moist heat e.g boiling water, steam, hot tar or fat, hot oil etc

FIRST AID TREATMENT

  1. remove the casualty from the danger
  2. reassure the casualty
  3. apply cold water in slight or moderate burs
  4. blot the area dry
  5. apply or cover the area with clean and dry clot
  6. elevate the area if there are swellings
  7. if cloth is burnt or stick to the skin, do not remove them
  8. treat shock
  9. if burn is extensive, send for medical aid

 

  1. STINGS: it is a wound inflicted by an animal e.g scorpion.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  1. severe pains at the joint
  2. heart disorder

FIRST AID TREATMENT

  1. wound should be treated with an antiseptic lotion
  2. use cold compress
  3. use tourniquet to locate the place

 

  1. BITES: this is when an animal(dog, snake, bats etc) bites introducing venoms or other germs into the human body.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  1. nausea/vomiting
  2. fainting due to loss of fluid into the extra vascular compartment
  3. sweating
  4. difficult respiration
  5. collapsing and convulsion
  6. local pain and swelling

FIRST AID TREATMENT

  1. affected part should be kept low
  2. tie firmly with a bandage above the wound
  3. suck the wound if necessary to extract the germs and encourage bleeding
  4. wash the wound with potassium permanganate or with warm water
  5. cover the wound
  6. Take a tetanus shot
  7. transport the casualty to the hospital

EVALUATION:    1. Explain the following, stating their causes, signs/symptoms and first aid treatment

  1. burns and scalds
  2. bites
  3. stings
