NOTE

PLANTING OPERATIONS

Planting operations are activities carried out during of planting

They are;

  1. Seed treatment: Prior to planting, the seeds are to be treated with

chemicals to be protected against soil-borne diseases or to prevent the

seeds from being stolen by insects

  1. Spacing/Distance: this is the distance between plants. Spacing of plants

varies from species to species to avoid too much competition for light,

water and nutrients. Proper spacing prevents the growth of weeds while

overcrowding leads to stunted plants and low yield. The spacing between

two plants on the same row is called row spacing.

  1. Planting: it is the actual planting/sowing. There are two types of

planting

  1. drilling- this is sowing seeds in rows but putting them in the ground
  2. Broadcasting- means scattering over the soil surface

  1. Seed rate: It is the quantity of seeds used on a hectare of land. It is

expressed in kilogrammes per hectare(kg/ha). For maize, the seed rate is

25-30kg per hectare at 3-4 seeds per stand.

  1. Planting date: it is the time, day, month of the year for planting the

seeds. Planting date is determined by climatic factors, types of crops to be

planted and seasons of the year.

  1. Planting depth: Each plant requires a correct planting depth for improved

yield. The seed should be covered with rich top soil and gently pressed

down to avoid air pockets.

EVALUATION:    1. Define the term “Planting operations”

  1. Discuss all the planting operations

CLASSWORK: As in evaluation
