INTRODUCTION |
The teacher revises the previous lesson and introduces the new topic by defining phrases. She further defines noun phrases and discusses it functions.
A phrase is a word or group of related words that can be taken as a single unit in a sentence. Unlike sentences, a phrase does not express a complete thought. Some examples of phrases a. The man b. Happily ever after c. Might be leaving d. Into the bush e. Very beautiful Noun phrase A noun phrase is a group of words that has a noun as its headword or key word. A noun phrase performs the same functions as a noun
Functions of a noun phrase a. Noun phrase as subject e.g i. The man killed the snake ii. The beautiful girl is in my school iii. His father is a shoemaker b. Noun phrase as object e.g i. She saw the man ii. Ada jumped over the wall last night iii. She dropped the book on the table c. Noun phrases as complement e.g i. The man is my class teacher ii. His father is the king iii. The teacher explains verb phrases and gives examples A verb phrase is a group of words that has the verb as the headword or key word. It performs the action of the sentence just like the verb.
