NOTE

SEXUAL PROPAGATION

Sexual propagation takes place when plants are raised from seeds which

have been formed as a result of the fusion of the male and female

gametes. Examples of crops propagated by seeds are oranges, maize,

beans, okro, mangoes, groundnut etc

ADVANTAGES OF SEXUAL PROPAGATION

  1. It is a sure method of crop improvement since cross pollination results in

crop variability

  1. seeds are small, convenient to handle, store, transport, procure and sow
  2. it is a less expensive method of propagation
  3. increase in plant population can easily be achieved
  4. offspring of self-pollination are like the parents

DISADVANTAGES OF SEXUAL PROPAGATION

  1. few seeds may be produced
  2. seeds may not germinate properly
  3. they take longer time to mature and produce fruits
  4. some seeds do not germinate easily due to dormancy
  5. it reduces the quantity for consumption
  6. growth, maturity and yield of plants from seeds are not always uniform.

EVALUATION:    1. Explain the meaning of sexual propagation

  1. State the advantages of sexual propagation
  2. State the disadvantages of sexual propagation
