NOTE

DRAMATIC AND RHYTHMICAL ACTIVITIES

Rhythmical activities are movements that are performed according to a beat. These activities are usually accompanied by body movements and music e.g singing, clapping, whistling etc

TYPES OF RHYTHMICAL ACTIVITIES
1. Fundamental Rhythm: activities under this group make use of movements like walking, sliding, running, hopping, galloping, skipping, jumping, spinning etc. these activities are locomotor movement

Others are non-locomotor movements such as standing, lying, sitting, pulling, pushing etc

  1. Marching guidelines: It is guided by some commands in sequence as follows:
  2. stand at attention
  3. stand at ease
  4. mark time
  5. forward match
  6. left/right wheel
  7. about wheel
  8. halt

the following rules are observed when marching

  1. arm swinging should be natural and are never above the shoulder
  2. the leg movement should require that the heel touches the ground first
  3. the head should be held erect as well as the body but not stiff
  4. the movement of the leg should be generated from the hip

 

  1. Creative dramatic rhythms and singing games

This involves imitating the movement of animals or anything as expected form the music provided e.g I remember when I was a soldier(with this one is expected to march like a soldier), Fire on the mountain(here it is expected that where there is fire on the mountain people will run for their lives) etc. Other singing games are row row row your boat, who will be my friend, the thread follows the needle, do as I do etc

 

  1. Folk dancers: These are the traditional dancers of a given community or country which may involve songs or drama about people, places, seasons, festivals and occupations e.g Atilogwu dance, masquerade dance etc. Instruments used include drums, Ogene, bata, gangan, ekwe, oyo etc

 

  1. Social dances: These can be local or foreign dances e.g African high life, reggae, makossa etc

OBJECTIVES OF RHYTHMIC ACTIVITIES

  1. Maintains good posture and physical efficiency
  2. develops a balance and well coordinated body
  3. promotes emotional freedom
  4. develops skills necessary for recreational enjoyment

 

GYMNASTICS AND AEROBICS

Gymnastics is the performance of systematic exercises—often with the use of rings, bars, and other apparatus—either as a competitive sport or to improve strength, agility, coordination, and physical conditioning.

Aerobics is a system of physical conditioning involving exercises (as running, walking, swimming, or calisthenics) strenuously performed so as to cause marked temporary increase in respiration and heart rate.
