INTRODUCTION

The teacher revises the previous lesson and introduces the new topic by explaining what adjectives. She further explains the simple rules to observe when using possessive adjectives

An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun by limiting its meaning. Adjectives answers any one of the following questions

1.   What kind?

a.   She is wearing a black dress

b.   He is married to an Indian woman

2.   Which one?

a.   He is celebrating his fiftieth birthday

b.   That girl is my friend

3.   How many?

a.   I have three sisters

b.   He made several phone calls

Possessive adjectives

Adjectives, in addition to nouns and pronouns can also show possession

Examples

This is my friend

That is your friend

Look at his mother

Look at her father

My, your, his and her in the above sentences are possessive adjectives.

Below are simple rules to observe when using possessive adjectives

1.   If the possessor is singular, the singular forms(my, your, his, her) are used regardless of the form of the thing that is possessed(whether singular or plural) e.g

a.   “his wife”(singular possessive adjective + singular pronoun)

b.   “His wives”(singular possessive adjective + plural noun)

2.   Whether the possessed is singular or plural, the plural forms(our, your, their) are used, if the possessor is plural e.g

a.   Our friend is coming(plural possessive adjective + singular noun)

b.   Our friends are coming(plural possessive adjective + plural noun)

3.   The possessive adjective is masculine if the possessor is masculine; the possessive adjective is feminine if the possessor is feminine, regardless of the gender of the thing possessed e.g

a.   She is teaching her students

b.   He is teaching his students

c.   The bird is losing its feathers

d.   Grandma is talking to her friend

e.   Grandpa is talking to his friend

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELLING

The teacher then discusses what demonstrative adjectives are and gives examples

Demonstrative adjectives are adjectives that “points” out nouns

Examples

1.   My father bought me this bag

2.   I don’t like that bag

3.   My mother gave me these shoes

4.   I love those shoes

NOTE:

This and that goes with singular nouns

These and those go with plural nouns

Demonstrative adjectives can be confused with demonstrative pronouns. Even though they are similar, their functions differ. While demonstrative adjectives appear before the nouns that they point out, demonstrative pronouns stand in the place of nouns that they point out

Examples

That is the car I want(demonstrative pronoun)

I want that car(demonstrative adjective)
