NOTE

POST-HARVESTING OPERATIONS

These are activities that take place after the harvesting the crops.

They are

  1. Processing: this is the conversion of freshly harvested produce into new forms for consumption, storage or experimental purposes
  2. Storage: this is the preservation of agricultural produce for future use. The storage materials used are silos, cribs, barns, fences, rhombus etc

Purpose of storage

  1. availability for the next planting season
  2. to protect seed from spoilage
  3. to prevent pilfering and stealing
  4. Distribution of crops: this is the supplying of crops to the end-user.
  5. Marketing of crops: This is the process of ensuring that the crops produced move from producers to the consumers. For consumers to buy quality products, it must be graded. Crops can be graded as A, B and C or grade 1, 2 and 3.

Some marketing agents of crops

  1. co-operative societies
  2. producers or farmers
  3. retailers or petty traders
