The teacher then outlines the features and functions of nouns

 

Nouns have typical features such as

1.   A noun can appear before or after the verb in a sentence: Tolu is a girl

2.   A noun can take a plural ending s/es or any other form that means more than one: chairs, feet, oxen, knives

3.   A noun can have a possessive form that indicates ownership: the boy’s book, the boys’ books

4.   A noun can follow a class of little words such as the, a, an, this, these, that, those, many, several etc

 

Functions of nouns

1.   Subject of a verb e.g Raji is hardworking

2.   Direct object e.g Kayode gave the ruler to Fatima

3.   Indirect object e.g Kayode gave Fatima the ruler

4.   Subject complement e.g Funmi is a student

5.   Object complement e.g They made Funmi the class captain

6.   Prepositional complement e.g He lived in Lagos for ten years
