BRIEF HISTORY OF FOOTBALL

The game originated from Greece and was obtained by the Romans and passed on to England.

Initially the game of football was crude but in 1848, the advocates of football met in Cambridge to draw up list of rules which became known as the Cambridge rules. In 1863, this group formed a football association called London Football Association. This body existed until the formation of the Federation of International Football(FIFA) in 1904.

In Nigeria, we have various local clubs and national teams such as super eagles, flying eagles, the eaglets(male teams), the falcons and falconettes(female teams).

DESCRIPTION OF A FOOTBALL GAME

Soccer is a team sports played by 11 players(males or females) on each sides of the opposite team. One of each team must be the goalkeeper.

In a game of football, each players seek to advance a round inflated leather or (rubber ball) toward and between an opponent’s goal post and under the crossbar, by ether kicking, dribbling or pushing it with any part of the body except with arms or hands, goal keepers excluded.

  2. Heading: Heading is to control the ball using the head to pass, shoot, or clear. This can be done from a standing, jumping, or diving position
  3. Dribbling: Dribbling means staying on the ball while moving it around the pitch
  4. Tackling: It means to seize and throw down or stop (an opposing player with the ball) in football
  5. Throw-in: A throw-in is awarded to the opponents of the player who last touched the ball when the whole of the ball passes over the touchline, on the ground or in the air.
  6. Catching: This is when the goal keeper tries to keep the ball from entering the goal post by catching it
  7. Feinting or selling the dummy: This is pretended movement. It is intended to trick the opponent. It could be through zig-zag, straight line or circle feinting
  8. Passing: This involves pushing the ball to a partner with any part of the body except the hand. It can be done with the sole of the foot, the inside or the outside of the foot
