EMINENT NIGERIANS WHO OBTAINED FREEDOM FOR THEIR PEOPLE

  1. Nnamdi Azikiwe (1904-1996): Known as the "Father of Nigerian Independence," Nnamdi Azikiwe played a crucial role in Nigeria's struggle for independence from British colonial rule. As a journalist, politician, and statesman, he founded the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) and was an advocate for self-governance. Azikiwe served as Nigeria's first President from 1963 to 1966.
  2. Obafemi Awolowo (1909-1987): A prominent political leader and one of the key figures in Nigeria's independence movement, Awolowo was the leader of the Action Group party. He was instrumental in advocating for regional autonomy and social justice and worked towards the economic development of the Western Region. He served as the Premier of the Western Region and contributed significantly to education and infrastructure.
  3. Ahmadu Bello (1910-1966): As the Sardauna of Sokoto, Ahmadu Bello was a key leader in Nigeria's northern region and a prominent figure in the independence movement. He was the first premier of Northern Nigeria and played a crucial role in unifying the northern states. He was an advocate for self-governance and worked towards the development of education and agriculture in the north.
  4. Margaret Ekpo (1914-2006): A prominent female leader and activist, Margaret Ekpo was a key figure in the Nigerian women's movement and played an essential role in the struggle for independence. She was a founding member of the Women's International Democratic Federation and actively campaigned for women's rights and political participation. Her efforts helped mobilize women across Nigeria for the independence movement.
  5. Ken Saro-Wiwa (1941-1995): A writer and environmental activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa fought for the rights of the Ogoni people in the Niger Delta, who faced severe environmental degradation due to oil extraction. He led the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) and campaigned for environmental justice and political rights.
