The aim in discus throwing is to release the discus with the greatest amount of force so that it can travel the greatest distance possible

FACILITY: Discus pitch

The implement: it has a body of wood, a brass metal at the centre and a brass metal plate round its circumference. It weighs 2kg for men and 1kg for women

Competitors: it requires tall, muscular, heavy and huge men and women. It requires both speed and strength. To achieve longer distances, balance and coordination is also required.

THROWING STYLES

  1. jump throw
  2. spinning throw
  3. running rotation throw

FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS IN DISCUS THROWS
1. The grip: the discus should rest flat on the palm, the fingers spread on it and the pads of the first joint rests over the metal rim

  1. The stance: the thrower stands at the back of the circle with the back of the direction of throw
  2. The preliminary swing: the thrower swings the discus not more than two or three times to gain confidence
  3. The throw: At the end of the rotation, the discus is thrown from the front of the circle
  4. the rotation: In speed and outstretched hand, the discus spins across the circle and lands in its front half
  5. The reverse: After delivery, the athlete turns to prevent being thrown out of the circle by the force of delivery
  6. The follow through: The athlete rotates to the left to remain in the ring and avoid fouling

RULES AND REGULATIONS OF DISCUS
