NOTE
INFORMATION TRANSMISSION
Information transmission can be defined as a process of transferring information from a source to another, called destination through a communication medium.
It could be defined as the physical transfer of information from point-to-point or point-to-multipoint in a communication channel.
METHODS/WAYS OF INFORMATION TRANSMISSION
There are two methods of transmitting information and these methods are as follows:
- ANCIENT METHOD OF INFORMATION TRANSMISSION
The various ways of transmitting information in the ancient time are:
- Oral Information: this is the passing of information from one person to another by words of mouth which is done face to face and can be in form of discussion.
- Smoky/Fire: this is another means of re – directing a lost person to a settlement. It can also be a means of communication to a farmer or other people that settlement exist nearby or to inform the farmer that he can come to collect fire if need it.
- Town Crier: this method is popular with the traditional chiefs when the wanted to pass information to their subjects. The town crier carries a gong and beat it around the village or settlement.
- Drum beating: beating of local drums was another means of sending information across to people. Different drum beating gave signs of different occasion and festivals e.g. drum beating of war and that of victory, e.t.c.
- Whistling: Human whistling is the production of sound by means of carefully controlling a stream of air flowing through a small hole. Whistling is used to transmit information in a voiceless manner to people or animals. E.g Fulani, security guards, hunters.
- Drawing/Diagrams: Drawings or diagrams are visual representation of events or action, quantity, seasons, etc. each diagram or drawing gives a mental picture of an event.
- Making Representations: Ancient days people used pebbles, stones, sticks to make representation of items. Charcoals are used to make marks on the walls.
- Fire/Smoke: Smoke is a cloud of particles suspended in the air. This transmits good or bad information. People are rescued in the bush during the search for missing persons as a result of the search party seeing a fire or smoke.
- Tribal Marks: tribal marks are made on human body for different reasons or purpose e.g. a tribal mark for beautification or differentiate members of one tribe from others.
- MODERN METHOD OF INFORMATION TRANSMISSION
Transmitting information is easier and efficient when compared with the ancient methods. In electronic age, there are inventions and technologies in place to replace the ancient ones and these are:
- Printing: Printing is a process for reproducing text and image, typically with ink on paper using a printing press. They are neat and more durable than handwritten documents, etc.
- Telephone: this is a machine use for disseminating information orally over short and long distance.
- Radio: is another medium through which news or information is passed across to many groups of people and locations at the same time.
- Television: is a machine used to broadcast information through voice and picture.
- Fax Machine: is used to send text and graphics in image form. It works like a photocopying machine and then transfers the photocopied document to the receiver.
- Satellite: this is use to transmit high volume data, television broadcasting as well as telephone transmission.
- Computers are now used together with telecommunication systems for transmitting information over short or long distances which can be text, picture or numbers.
- GSM: Global system for mobile communication.
- Internet. It is the networking of computers internationally. It provides a means for exchanging information and communication with people all over the world using computers that are connected to each other.
EVALUATION: 1. Explain information transmission
- Mention and explain the two methods of transmitting information. Give five examples of each method
