SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Identify and describe different types of plane shapes.
  2. Discuss the properties of squares, rectangles, triangles, trapeziums, parallelograms, and circles.
  3. Compare and contrast the similarities and differences between these shapes.

Step 2 - Explanation

Introduces each shape: Square, Rectangle, Triangle, Trapezium, Parallelogram, Circle. Describes properties such as sides, angles, and symmetry.

Pupils observe and discuss the properties of each shape.

Step 3 - Demonstration

Uses flashcards to show examples of each shape.

Pupils identify and name shapes based on their properties.

Step 4 - Practice

Pupils work in pairs to identify and classify different shapes.

NOTE ON BOARD:

  • Square: 4 equal sides, 4 right angles
  • Rectangle: 4 sides, opposite sides equal, 4 right angles
  • Triangle: 3 sides, 3 angles
  • Trapezium: 4 sides, one pair of parallel sides
  • Parallelogram:

4 sides, opposite sides equal and parallel

  • Circle: 1 curved side, no corners

EVALUATION (5 exercises):

  1. Draw and label the properties of a square.
  2. Describe a rectangle’s properties.
  3. What is the difference between a square and a rectangle?
  4. Define and explain the properties of a triangle.
  5. Draw a parallelogram and label its properties.

CLASSWORK (5 questions):

  1. Draw a trapezium and label its properties.
  2. Identify and list the properties of a circle.
  3. Draw and label the properties of a triangle.
  4. Describe the properties of a square.
  5. Compare and contrast a rectangle and a square.

ASSIGNMENT (5 tasks):

  1. Draw and label a square, rectangle, and circle.
  2. Compare and contrast the properties of a triangle and a parallelogram.
  3. Write the properties of a trapezium.
  4. Create a word problem that involves identifying shapes.
