NOTE

INSECT PESTS

Insects are the most serious pests of crops both in the farm and in storage. They are classified thus;

  1. piercing and sucking insects: The mandibles and maxillae form piercing stylets enclosed in a groove on the surface of a long thin labium. Some examples of piercing and sucking insects are butterfly, cotton stainer, sphids, mealybugs etc

Damage on crops

  1. causes loss of cell sap
  2. causes stunted and distorted growth
  3. attacks flowers and reduces seed production
  4. serves as vectors of viral diseases
  5. injects toxic saliva into the plants causing lesions and secondary infections like fungal attack

 

  1. Biting and chewing insects: these insects bite and chew leaves and other plant tissues such as seeds, fruits and flowers. Some examples of biting and chewing insects are crickets, cockroaches, termites, locusts etc

 

  1. Boring insects: these insects eat up the grains reducing them to powdery residues. Some examples are rice weevil, bean weevil, maize weevil etc

 

  1. Nematodes: these are cylindrical non-segmented worms and they live mainly inside the soil and in plant roots.

Damage on crops

  1. they eat up the leaf reducing photosynthetic surface and yield
  2. causes stunted growth
  3. destroys flowers preventing fertilization
  4. spread diseases or create openings for disease organisms
