NOTE

CALL TO OBEDIENCE

Obedience is the act of following commands, rules, or instructions from an authority figure or a governing body. It involves a willingness to comply with directives and expectations, demonstrating respect and commitment to the authority being followed. In a spiritual context, obedience often refers to the adherence to God's will and teachings, reflecting faith and trust in His plans.

The Story of Abraham Obeying God’s Call (Genesis 12:1-4)

The story of Abraham's obedience begins in Genesis 12:1-4, where God calls Abram (later named Abraham) to leave his homeland and family for a land that God would show him. In this passage, God commands Abram to:

  • Leave his country, relatives, and father's house.
  • Go to a land that God would reveal to him.

In response to God's call, Abram demonstrates immediate obedience. He departs from Haran at the age of seventy-five, taking with him his wife Sarai (later named Sarah), his nephew Lot, and the possessions they had acquired. Despite the uncertainties of leaving behind everything familiar, Abram trusts in God's promise and sets out on this new journey, illustrating a profound example of faith and obedience.

Blessings of Abraham’s Obedience (Genesis 12:5-9)

In Genesis 12:5-9, several blessings emerge as a result of Abraham's obedience to God:

  1. Divine Promise: God promises to make Abraham into a great nation, indicating that through his lineage, many descendants would arise.
  2. Blessing and Great Name: God assures Abraham that He will bless him and make his name great. This promise signifies that Abraham would be honored and recognized for his faith and obedience.
  3. Blessing to Others: God states that through Abraham, all families of the earth would be blessed, foreshadowing the future covenant relationship that would extend beyond Abraham's immediate descendants to all nations.

EVALUATION:

  1. How is obedience defined in a spiritual context, and why is it considered important for a believer's relationship with God?
  2. What specific commands did God give to Abram in Genesis 12:1-4, and what was Abram's response to those commands?
  3. At what age did Abram leave Haran, and what significance does this have in understanding his obedience to God?
  4. Identify and explain the blessings that God promised Abraham as a result of his obedience, as recorded in Genesis 12:5-9.
  5. How does Abraham's obedience serve as an example for believers today, particularly in terms of trusting God's plan despite uncertainties?
