PESTS

Pests are any organism whose activities result in the reduction in quantity and quality of yield of crops

Some common agricultural pests include: mammals, birds and insects

  1. Mammals: Mammals are animals with back bones. Their bodies are usually covered with hairs and they feed their young ones with milk. Some examples of mammal pests are: Rats and rodents attack the root of plants like yam, cassava, young rice plant and oil palm seedlings. Monkeys destroy citrus and banana crops while bats suck juice of fruits. Controlling them is by shooting or trapping

 

  1. Birds: they are the most serious pest of cereals and fruit crops. Birds such as pigeons, vultures, etc
