INTRODUCTION

Formation of adverbs

1.   Adverbs of manner are formed by adding ‘ly’ to the adjective e.g

a.   Clever – cleverly

b.   Wise – wisely

c.   Kind -. Kindly

d.   Foolish – foolishly

e.   Quick – quickly

f.     Beautiful – beautifully

2.   When the adjective ends with ‘y’ preceded by a consonant, ‘y’ is changed into ‘I’ and ‘ly’ is added e.g

a.   happy – happily

b.   ready – readily

c.   heavy – heavily

3.   When the adjective ends with ‘le’, ‘e’ is changed into ‘y’ e.g

a.   Single – singly

b.   Double – doubly

4.   Final ‘e’ is retained and ‘ly’ is added e.g

a.   Extreme – extremely

b.   Intensive – intensively

c.   Extensive – extensively

d.   Comprehensive – comprehensively

Exceptions

a.   True – truly

b.   Due – duly

c.   Whole - wholly

5.   For adjectives ending with able-ible, the final ‘e’ is dropped and ‘y’ is added e.g

6.   Some adverbs are compounded with a noun or adjective e.g

a.   Sometimes

b.   Meantime

c.   Meanwhile

7.   Some adverbs are compounded with ‘a’ e.g afoot, asleep, ahead, aboard, away etc

8.   Some adverbs are compounded with ‘to’ and ‘be’ e.g today, tonight, behind, below, beyond, besides etc
