PRINTER

Printer is a piece of hardware for a computer that allows a user to print information on paper such as letters and pictures.

There are different types and models of printers. The most commonly used computer printers are divided into two with examples

1. Impact printer: An impact printer has mechanisms resembling those of a typewriter. It forms characters or images by striking a ribbon i.e. It has physical contact with the paper.

Types of Impact printers are:

  1. Dot matrix
  2. Character printer (Daisy wheel)
  3. Line printer

2. Non- impact printer: Used almost everywhere now. They were recently developed to meet some of the needs that were not being satisfied by impact technology because, they have fewer moving parts. It forms character and images without direct physical contact between the printing mechanism and the paper.

The non printer available are:

  1. Laser High speed
  2. Thermal
  3. Inkjet—For quality letter printing

Differences between Impact and Non-impact printers

BASIS OF

IMPACT PRINTERS

NON- IMPACT PRINTERS

1. Description

Impact printer’s forms image and characters by striking a mechanism

Non-impact printers form characters and images without direct physical contact between the printing mechanism and the power

2. Printing mechanism

Printing impact is done by hammering a metal pin

Printing is done by depositing ink on paper in any form

3. Speed

They are low speed printers

They are very fast; they can print many pages per minutes

4. Cost

They are less expensive

They are very expensive

5. Printing process

They use pins, hammers or wheel to strike against an inked ribbon

They use the latest technologies

6. Noise level

They have high level of noise because they have many parts and also the print head strikes on ribbon and paper

They do not have high level of noise The process of laying ink or toner onto paper is virtually silent.

7. Printing quality

Printing quality is lower than those of non - impact printers

Printing quality is higher than those of impact printers

8. Technology

They use old technologies

They use latest technologies

9. Nature of paper used

They use continuous paper sheet

They often use individual sheet

EVALUATION:    1. Define Printer

  1. State and explain the types of printer, giving two examples of each
  2. State five differences between impact and non-impact printers

CLASSWORK: As in evaluation

CONCLUSION: The teacher commends the students positively
