MODELING: PRODUCTION OF MODELS WITH PAPER

Paper mash, also known as paper mache, is a crafting technique that involves creating objects by layering pieces of paper or pulp over a mold or form, then allowing it to dry and harden into a solid shape.

Materials and tools for making paper mash

   Materials:

     - Paper (newspaper, tissue paper, or any other thin paper)

     - Water-based glue or flour-water paste

     - Balloon or other mold/form

     - Optional: Paint or varnish for finishing

   Tools:

     - Bowl or container for mixing glue or paste

     - Paintbrush or sponge for applying glue or paste

     - Scissors or tearing tool for cutting paper strips

     - Optional: Sandpaper for smoothing the surface

Method of making paper mash

  1. Tear or cut the paper into small strips or pieces.
  2. Prepare the glue or flour-water paste in a bowl.
  3. Dip the paper strips into the glue/paste, ensuring they are fully coated.
  4. Apply the soaked paper strips onto the mold or form, layering them evenly to cover the surface.
  5. Continue adding layers until the desired thickness is achieved.
  6. Allow the paper mash to dry completely. This may take several hours or overnight, depending on the thickness and humidity.
  7. Once dry, carefully remove the paper mash from the mold or form.
  8. Optionally, sand the surface for a smoother finish.
  9. Paint or varnish the paper mash object as desired.

Uses of paper mash

  1. Crafting: Paper mash is commonly used to create sculptures, masks, piñatas, and other decorative objects.
  2. Educational projects: It is often used in schools for art and craft projects.
