NOTE

INTRODUCTION TO TIE AND DYE

Tie and dye is a textile dyeing technique where portions of fabric are tied or bound with string, rubber bands, or other materials to create patterns, and then the fabric is dyed. The tied areas resist the dye, creating areas of color contrast or pattern on the fabric.

Types of Tie and Dye Designs

  1. Tying: Involves tying sections of fabric with string or rubber bands before dyeing.
  2. Folding: Fabric is folded in various ways to create geometric or abstract patterns.
  3. Clamping: Objects like blocks, sticks, or clips are used to clamp sections of fabric before dyeing, creating unique patterns.

Materials and Tools for Tie and Dye

   - Fabric (cotton, silk, or other natural fibers)

   - Dyes (fabric dye or natural dyes)

   - Chemical fixers (like soda ash) to set the dye

   - Plastic basins or buckets for dye baths

   - Spatula or tongs for turning fabric in the dye bath

   - Gloves for hand protection

   - Twine or rubber bands for tying fabric

Making Tie and Dye Designs and Furnishing Process

  1. Prepare the fabric: Wash and soak the fabric to remove any sizing or finishes.
  2. Prepare the dyes: Mix the dyes according to instructions, and prepare the dye baths in plastic basins.
  3. Create designs: Use tying, folding, or clamping techniques to create desired patterns on the fabric.
  4. Dyeing process: Submerge the fabric in the dye bath, ensuring all tied or bound areas are fully covered.
  5. Fixing the dye: After dyeing, rinse the fabric and apply chemical fixers to set the dye.
  1. Rinse and dry: Rinse the fabric thoroughly to remove excess dye, and then hang or lay flat to dry.
  2. Finish: Once dry, remove the ties or bindings, and the fabric is ready for use or further embellishment.

EVALUATION: 1.  What is the meaning of tie and dye?

  1. State the three types of tie and dye
  2. Mention 5 materials and tools for tie and dye

CLASSWORK: As in evaluation

CONCLUSION: The teacher commends the students positively
